Board Chair for more tobacco, team work

The new Board Chairperson of the Tobacco Commission has urged staff to encourage small holder farmers to grow more tobacco because they are assured of a market.

Addressing Lilongwe-based staff on Wednesday, Mr Michael Nyirenda said there were a lot of companies interested to buy Malawi tobacco.

“We have a lot of new tobacco buyers. We, therefore, need more tobacco,” said Mr Nyirenda.

He also called for team work among staff to accomplish what the Commission exists for.

Chief Executive Officer Dr. Joseph Chidanti-Malunga assured the Board Chairperson that team work already reigned in the Commission.

“We have been able to attract new tobacco buyers and have worked on a new tobacco bill as directed by the State President all thanks to team work in the Commission,” said Dr. Chidanti-Malunga.

Mr Nyirenda is, for the first time since his appointment as Board Chairperson on 10th December, 2022, holding meetings with Tobacco Commission staff in all the three regions of the country.

His appointment ended an eight-month vacancy in the office of the Board Chairperson.

The former Board Chairperson Honourable Harry Mkandawire left office following his appointment as a cabinet Minister.
