Let’s preserve the environment – TC CEO

February 24, 2023
The Tobacco Commission has reiterated the need for efforts to preserve the environment, especially in the context of tobacco farming and marketing in the country.

Chief Executive Officer Dr Joseph Chidanti-Malunga made a fresh call on environmental preservation at a tree planting exercise in Rumphi, northern Malawi, on Saturday.

The Rumphi tree planting was part of the Commission’s country wide exercise in which staff joined hands with communities in various districts to plant trees.

Other exercises were carried out in Kasungu and Dedza districts in the central region and Phalombe in the south.

Speaking in Rumphi, Dr. Joseph Chidanti-Malunga said preserving the environment is critical in the marketing of Malawi tobacco.

“As a tobacco growing country, we need to make our leaf competitive on the international market. Today, our customers expect us to satisfy certain international requirements which include environmental preservation,” said Dr Chidanti-Malunga.

Apart from the trees planted on the day of the exercise, the Commission left the communities with some seedlings. If all get planted, the Commission will have given the world 14 thousand new trees.

President Dr Lazarus Chakwera launched the 2022-2023 national tree planting season on 23 December, 2022 in Mangochi.
