2025 marketing season opens

The 2024/2025 tobacco selling season will open on Wednesday, 9th April with Lilongwe Selling Floors as the first.

Tobacco Commission spokesperson Telephorus Chigwenembe says preparations for the start of the marketing season are at an advanced stage.

“We have been meeting different stakeholders to be updated on the level of the preparedness and we are satisfied,” he said.

The spokesman also said the Commission was optimistic about this year’s tobacco selling season.

“We expect that trading will be as exciting as last year’s or even better. This year’s trade demand is higher than expected production volumes, thereby creating an opportunity for good competition. Secondly, we expect that we will not have many cases of nested tobacco bales.”

A preliminary trade demand is pegged at 213 million kilogrammes.

The first round of crop estimates survey projected production of 174 million kilogrammes.

Last year, 133 million kilogrammes was sold at an average price of $2.98 per kg.

The country’s other selling floors will open as follows: Chinkhoma Floors on Friday, April 11; Limbe Floors on Monday, April 14; and Mzuzu Floors on Monday, April 28.

Meanwhile, the number of buying companies for the 2024/2025 tobacco selling season will be announced once licensing is finalised.
