Cost of production consultation meetings roll out

The Tobacco Commission on March 24 rolled out the 2025/2026 farming season cost of production (CoP) consultation meetings.

The consultations started with tobacco growers based in the southern region.

The second session was held with growers and grower representatives in Lilongwe in the central region while a similar one is expected in Mzuzu in the north on Friday, March 27.

Speaking during the opening of cost of the sessions in Blantyre, Controller of Agricultural Services (responsible for institutions) in the Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Jeromy Nkhoma, said the consultations have government’s blessings as the meetings help increase understanding among stakeholders, thereby birthing smooth selling seasons.

“Government doesn’t want market disruptions during the selling season. We want all stakeholders to understand the whole process,” said Dr. Nkhoma.

Among others, CoP guides Government in setting minimum prices.

Cost of Production research is conducted by ARET and stakeholder engagement on the findings is coordinated by the Tobacco Commission
