Industry out to survey tobacco fields

The first round of crop estimates survey for the 2024/2025 tobacco farming season rolled out on Monday, with data collection members from the industry have been deployed to various parts of the country.

Coordinated by the Commission, the survey, which ends on January 31, is aimed at providing an initial forecast of tobacco volumes for 2025.

The results of the survey are expected out in February.

Recent rains have revived hopes of crop survival, after some weeks of a dry spell in some parts of the country started to dampen prospects for a good yield this year.

The tentative demand for Malawi tobacco in 2025 is pegged at 213 million kilogrammes, up from 190 million demanded in 2024.

In 2024, the country supplied 133 million kilogrammes.

As of December 31, 2024, the Commission had licensed 253.4 million kilogrammes of tobacco.
