Licensed tobacco volumes increase

Licensed tobacco volumes increase

There is an increase in licensed tobacco volumes in the on-going 2023/2024 registration and licensing exercise when compared to last year’s.

By Monday, 18 September, the Commission had already licensed 150 million kilogrammes of tobacco. By the same date last year, licensed volumes stood at 129 million kilogrammes.

The status of the licensed volumes gives the Commission the confidence that production could be higher this year than last season.

Last year, the trade demand was at 170million kilogrammes and production was at 120 million. Merchants are yet to indicate the trade demand for the 2023/2024 farming season.

The Commission attributes the higher licensed volumes this year to last marketing season’s good prices which have motivated farmers to plan to grow more this season. The assurance that there will be additional buyers this farming season has also had a positive effect on farmers’ interest to grow tobacco.

Meanwhile, in addition to traditional registration and licensing at TC offices in Lilongwe, Limbe, Kasungu and Mzuzu, a field registration and licensing exercise is also being conducted in different areas in all the country’s three regions.

The registration and licensing exercise will close on 30 September.
