Tobacco Markets to close September 10

The 2026 tobacco marketing season will close on Thursday, 10 th
September at all the country’s four tobacco floors, after 21 weeks of
trading.

The closing follows an industry assessment that revealed that most of the
country’s tobacco has been sold.

Two weeks to the closing day, after 19 weeks of trading, 142.4 million
kilogrammes of tobacco valued at $282.5 million was sold at an average
price of $1.98/kg. During a corresponding period in 2025, tobacco weighing
197.2 million kilogrammes valued at $500.4 million had been sold at ana
average price of $2.54/kilogramme.

High auction tobacco rejection rates in the initial weeks of the marketing
season worried stakeholders, prompting the Tobacco Commission to
initiate stakeholder engagements to find a lasting solution. Hope was
restored in the marketing season when the rejection rates subsided to
approximately 50%.

Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development Hon. Roza Fatch
Mbilizi opened the 2026 tobacco marketing season at Lilongwe Floors on
20 th April, 2026.
