Tobacco Selling Season takes off

State President Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera on Wednesday opened the 2025 tobacco selling season at Kanengo in Lilongwe.

Speaking to the media after witnessing sales in the floors, President Chakwera said it was encouraging to see tobacco being bought way above set minimum prices.

He further said he wanted a win-win situation for all in the industry.

“What I want is a win-win situation where farmers rejoice, buyers are happy. Together as a nation we work to make sure that this industry does serve Malawians,” he said.

Speaking at the rally, Minister of Agriculture Hon. Sam Kawale noted there were ‘low’ prices for the crop on the first day because what had been brought was bottom leaf which is usually of inferior quality.

At Chinkhoma Floors which was opened on Friday, prices seemed to pick up.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture Hon. Benedicto Chambo who presided over Chinkhoma opening praised the quality of the tobacco.

He also issued a stern warning against tobacco smuggling.

In 2025, it is projected that Malawi will have a little more than 170 million kilogrammes of tobacco of all types. The trade demand is pegged at 213 million kilogrammes.

In 2024, Malawi produced 133 million kilogrammes of tobacco.
