Grower registration and licensing period extended

The Commission has extended the 2023 farmer registration and licensing period to 31 October.

The registration and licensing exercise which started on 10 July this year was supposed to close on Saturday, September 30.

“We have extended the period in response to farmers’ overwhelming interest to grow tobacco this year and to other stakeholders’ request,” said Chief Executive Officer, Dr Joseph Chidanti Malunga when he announced the extension to journalists in Lilongwe on Friday.

During the extension, farmers will not be required to pay any penalties.

Apart from the traditional farmer registration and licensing at the Commission’s offices in Lilongwe, Limbe, Kasungu and Mzuzu, in the past three weeks, the exercise was also conducted in different tobacco growing areas.

The Commission is on a campaign to increase Malawi’s annual tobacco production to 200 million kilogrammes by 2028.

In 2023, 120 million kilogrammes of tobacco, valued at $ 283million, was sold.
